If they don't learn what they need to in 1st than what in the world are they going to do in 2nd? Parents assure teachers that they will "work with" their kids over the summer - if it's that easy why didn't they do it all year long so we wouldn't have this problem?

Jennifer @ Herding Kats In Kindergarten? In my case I truly believe he just needs one more year to come out of his shell and get a firm foundation. Mama promised that they'd work on reading over the summer but as she doesn't speak any English I don't see how that's going to happen. I wish parents understood how much we take these kinds of decisions to heart!

Jennifer @ Herding Kats In KindergartenJennifer K.https://www.blogger.com/profile/15114666136412667718noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7369565567676810137.post-75091856943167700672012-05-19T18:28:37.605-07:002012-05-19T18:28:37.605-07:00Teri, in our district they can refuse retention in...Teri, in our district they can refuse retention in any grade level, although I understand that will change in 2014 with full adoption of Common Core. One parent who refused retention for K said "It's only kindergarten." Ummm.....yeah, that's where they learn to read now , it's not all making mus pies and finger painting any more!

Jennifer @ Herding Kats In KindergartenJennifer K.https://www.blogger.com/profile/15114666136412667718noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7369565567676810137.post-62822493414799815092012-05-19T18:26:01.220-07:002012-05-19T18:26:01.220-07:00Holly, that video was hilarious! I have been teaching kindergarten for the past 8 years and had to recommend a student be retained this year. I have lost so much sleep over this. I have had multiple conferences with the parents and mom was in agreement but dad was holding out. After our last conference mom assured me that dad would give in and eventually he did. This will be my first kindergarten retention ever. Since we only offer half day kindergarten I usually believe first grade is better. But this little guy is so young and immature I think another year in kindergarten is what he needs. Thanks for listening to me ramble. I just want you to know that I understand that this was a difficult decision for you.Triciahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04613475102265937480noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7369565567676810137.post-11060648985211004912012-05-18T19:33:17.664-07:002012-05-18T19:33:17.664-07:00This had me rolling...and then, Holly, your video ...This had me rolling...and then, Holly, your video had me in tears. It truly saddens me that some parents can't do what's best for their child and push so hard to pass them on when they are not succeeding. It only hurts the child in the long run. :(

Lisa
Learning Is Something to TreasureLisa R.https://www.blogger.com/profile/13600005188065310724noreply@blogger.com
