Woohoo! A Water Day! (Freebie & Giveaway Winners!)

I took yesterday off because I wasn't feeling well, but I dragged my butt out of bed this morning, determined to tough it through the day. Imagine my relief when I got to school and was told that a water main had broken and without water we couldn't have school! We stood outside for about 1/2 hour turning away parents, then we went inside and had to call all of the bus students' families to make certain someone would be at home to care for them once the bus dropped them back off. By 10am we had contacted everyone and sent all of the kids home so we got to come home too!

Coincidentally my husband also had a short day today, so I was able to go to bed and get some rest so I'm now feeling a lot better. I really hate getting sick right after break - talk about lousy timing! My friend, who teaches my youngest son, got a horrible throat infection this week and could barely speak. After school on Wednesday she was on the phone with the dr.'s office, trying to get an appointment. They told her their next available appointment was on Monday and she replied "I'll be dead by Monday!" which of course sent Joshua running for my room, yelling "Mrs. McKelvey's going to die on Monday!" We had to explain to him that it was a figure of speech and she would be fine once she got some medicine.

Does anyone use Scott Foresman reading? What unit are you on? I started late in the year since I don't actually have the readers, I just use the spelling words so that my kiddos are on par with the other first grade classes. My teaching partner introduced me to "telephone spelling" and I thought I would share it with you too. It's a fun little worksheet that let's my kiddos practice their spelling words at the same time they work on addition! What do you think, is it something you could use each week? UPDATE: since some of you are ahead of me, I included the sheets for 3.2 through 3.6 - hope this helps!
