Yay for Fall Break! Plus some Halloween Freebies

I only had 2 days of school this week since we had Parent/Teacher conferences on Wednesday and then Thursday & Friday off for Fall Break, but I wanted to link up the start of our bat/owl/monster unit and share it with you! I wrote this post on Wednesday, but since it already has the pictures loaded up I hope you won't mind too much going back in time a little!

Woohoo! 4 days off! I am so excited to just hang out for 4 days, nothing to do but play with my kids, read books and create new things for my classroom. My husband mistakenly believed that Fall Break was Thanksgiving Break (ummm noooo, Thanksgiving Break is Thanksgiving Break! lol) so he did not take time off this weekend, so we're not going anywhere, which I actually like because now we can hang out without having the stress of packing and driving somewhere, just to come home and unpack and try to get ready for the new week. I had Parent/Teacher conferences this morning - I had 12 out of 20 conferences actually show, which is about par for the course. Then I got my classroom tidied, took down my farm bulletin board and set it up for my bat/owl/monster unit and generally got things in order for next week. Which means I can play guilt free for the next 4 days!

Here are a few pics of the beginning of my bat unit: we did this great 600 mosquito activity from Jodi at Fun In First and then we made our own bats with scrapbook paper. The window clings I found at JoAnn Fabrics, they're from Martha Stewart and my firsties love them!

Today I remade my Ordinal Owls activity so it's now numerals and number words. My friend had asked me to change it so she could use it with her kinders, so I'm sharing it here as well. Click the picture to grab it!

The second thing I made today was an onset/rime Halloween game. Most of my firsties are working on  onset/rime on the Literacy 1st Assessment,  so I thought I'd make a quick activity to give them some practice.
The important thing with this is that even if it's a nonsense word, they still apply their phonics skills and read the word as it is, rather than trying to make it a real word. Click below to see it for yourself!

Now I'm going to take a nap while my husband grills some steaks - it is actually chilly here so we might even turn on the heat for the first time this season! By the way, my blog is up for an award and I'd love it if you vote for me please!
